Recently, French authorities accused Russian nickel magnate Alexander Prokhorov of holding parties in Courcheval with scores of Russian prostitutes. Their proof: while no exchange of money-for-sex was found, the girls were apparently given "presents" in the form of expensive champagne, watches, clothes, and jewelry.
This is all a tragic misunderstanding between two different cultures. In the West, business magnates are expected to stay married to crusty, rank old wives, and to limit their pleasures in life to golf and wine collecting. In Russia, however, it is culturally acceptable for a man with money, or even with modest means, to have sex with young beautiful women. Moreover, while in the West women are accustomed to splitting dinner bills, in the unique culture of Russia, it is considered acceptable for a poor beautiful young woman to take expensive gifts from a man who has too much money to know what to do with.
Yes, Russians are strange. We would expect Mr. Prokhorov to be married to a wrinkled, bitter, bipolar wife, and to spend all of his free time playing golf, writing books about management, and collecting wines. But in expecting this of him, aren't we merely being cultural imperialists? Shouldn't we respect Russian culture, even if we personally do not condone the thought of having sex with young beautiful women, or the thought of these young women not paying for half of all their bills?
Let the Russians be Russians. Over time, they will learn that great sex and wild orgies are not nearly as satisfying as spending a day hitting a small ball into a small hole, waiting around while other old corporate men also hit a small ball into a small hole, and then coming home to an angry, ugly wife. For now, Russians will live without knowing the true pleasures in life. Poor Russians.
